Castle of Vicalvi

Castle of Vicalvi is a hilltop fortress in the Valle di Comino region featuring stone walls and defensive towers that overlook the surrounding landscape. The site displays multiple defensive structures with stretches of remaining walls and offers expansive views across the valley below.

The fortress began as a defensive structure using ancient masonry techniques and remained actively used for military purposes into the 1500s. Over its long existence, it underwent multiple renovations and reinforcements to adapt to changing warfare and protect the valley settlement.

The castle reflects the layered history of the region through its construction, where different building methods and stone work styles remain visible to visitors today. Walking around the site, you notice how each period left its own mark on the structure.

The site sits at elevation and is best visited during warmer months when access routes are most passable and visibility is clear. Wear sturdy footwear since the terrain is uneven and there are no paved paths leading to the fortress.

The walls incorporate stone blocks from earlier civilizations, including materials from Samnite fortifications that once protected the region centuries before the medieval period.
