Sacrario militare dei Caduti Oltremare, Military cemetery and museum in Bari, Italy.
The Sacrario militare dei Caduti Oltremare is a memorial complex in Bari spread across two floors within a park setting, housing bronze cabinets with records of fallen soldiers. The site includes a documentation center that preserves the names and history of those interred there.
The memorial was inaugurated in December 1967 and holds the remains of around 75,000 Italian soldiers from World War I, World War II, and colonial conflicts. It was built to preserve the memory of Italy's military involvement across several decades of warfare.
The memorial is divided into ten sectors representing different war theaters from the Balkans to East Africa, documenting Italian military presence across multiple regions. Each sector holds the memory of soldiers who lost their lives in different conflicts and distant places.
Entry is free and the site opens on weekdays during morning hours until early afternoon, with shorter hours on holidays. It is best to visit during daylight to fully explore the memorial sectors and the park grounds.
The site preserves the remains of 192 recipients of the Gold Medal of Military Valor, Italy's highest decoration for soldiers. Additionally, it holds 140 Eritrean and Libyan Askari soldiers, African troops who served alongside Italian forces in these distant campaigns.
