Conca dell'Incoronata, Navigation lock in Via San Marco, Milan, Italy.
The Conca dell'Incoronata lock contains a stone bridge, gates, and a sentry box at the endpoint of the Naviglio Martesana canal system.
Engineers including Leonardo da Vinci enhanced this lock in 1496, creating an efficient water management system for boats entering Milan through the Naviglio Martesana.
The lock gained its name from a neighboring 16th-century church and functioned as a tax collection point where merchants paid fees called 'gabelle'.
Located at Via San Marco 35, the site remains accessible throughout the day without entrance fees and connects to the Porta Nuova district.
The lock structure retains the final remaining bridge over the Naviglio Martesana within Milan's center, featuring original navigation equipment from centuries past.
