Ca’ Brutta, Residential complex in Porta Nuova, Milan, Italy
Ca' Brutta is a residential complex in Porta Nuova consisting of two six-story structures separated by a private street. The facades display travertine at the base, gray plaster in the middle section, and white marble details at the top.
Giovanni Muzio designed this residential complex between 1919 and 1922 as his first major undertaking. The building introduced the Novecento Italiano architectural style to Italy.
The name Ca' Brutta comes from how people first reacted to its bold design with unusual classical details and uneven window placement along the facades.
The complex was the first residential building in Italy to feature underground communal parking for residents. This innovative parking solution was integrated directly into the building design itself.
The building was groundbreaking for incorporating underground parking, a concept completely new to residential buildings at that time. This approach became a model for future residential developments across European cities.
