Sarn Valley, Alpine valley in South Tyrol, Italy
Sarn Valley is an alpine valley in South Tyrol that extends northward from Bolzano between the Sarentino Gorge and the Sarentino Alps. The terrain features forest-covered slopes, mountain meadows, and a series of villages distributed along the river.
The area has been inhabited since the Middle Ages, as evidenced by the ruins of Reinegg Castle overlooking the village of Sarentino. The valley served as a trade route connecting lower valleys with higher mountain regions and continues to shape settlement patterns.
The valley maintains traditional crafts like quill embroidery passed down through generations. Local bakeries still prepare Sarner Striezl pastries using time-honored recipes that visitors can observe and taste.
Access to the valley is mainly by road from Bolzano, with routes leading to various villages. During winter, higher passes may be snow-covered, so it is wise to check road conditions before traveling.
Lake Valdurna has turquoise water and is often overlooked by hikers despite being just a short walk from mountain villages. The small lake offers a quiet retreat among high peaks.
