Forte Tudaio, Military fort in Vigo di Cadore, Italy.
Forte Tudaio is a military fort located on Monte Tudaio at about 2,200 meters elevation, featuring three floors with four cylindrical gun stations. The structure is built from concrete and sits integrated into the mountainside, designed to blend with its surroundings.
The fort was built between 1911 and 1915 and served to defend the junction of the Ansiei, Comelico, and Carnia valleys during World War I. It was part of a larger defensive system protecting the border against Italian forces.
The barracks nearby have been converted into a permanent mountain shelter named after Luigi Da Rin Chiaurei, a local mountaineering figure who inspired climbers in the region.
Access to the fort is available via two hiking routes starting from the Pino Solitario restaurant parking area, with CAI trail 339 following the former military road. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for steep terrain at high elevation.
Inside the fort is a deep elevator shaft connecting ammunition storage areas through a concrete passage roughly 12 meters long. This underground transport system shows how carefully the structure was engineered to move supplies between levels.
