Madonna di Loreto, Spoleto

Madonna di Loreto is a Renaissance church in Spoleto with a symmetrical Greek cross layout and a simple facade decorated with pilasters. The building is connected to a long covered portico that stretches in front of it.

Construction of this church began in 1572 following the designs of Florentine architect Annibale de Lippi near the Porta San Matteo gate. It was built during a period when pilgrimage churches were being constructed across Italy to support popular devotion.

The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Loreto and reflects the devotion that pilgrims brought to this location. Visitors can still sense the reverence that shaped this site over the centuries.

A long covered passageway leads to the entrance and offers shelter in bad weather. The entry area is well-maintained and easily accessible, so visitors can enter comfortably.

Inside the church stands a reproduction of the Santa Casa di Loreto, creating a connection to a famous pilgrimage destination elsewhere in Europe. This replica allowed believers who could not travel to pray at this sacred site.
