Palazzo dei Capitani, Medieval palace in Malcesine, Italy.
Palazzo dei Capitani sits near the port of Malcesine and combines gothic and venetian architecture with renaissance features. The structure is built from stone and displays both medieval and later design elements.
The Scaliger family built the palace between 1200 and 1300 over roman ruins. In 1618 Verona purchased the building to serve as a residence for the Lake Captain.
The ground floor hall displays frescoes with symbols of the Gardesana dell'Acqua and Verona's coat of arms. These decorations reflect the site's connection to Venetian rule.
The ground floor and garden are accessible daily, while the first floor opens only during special events. Plan your visit around the regular hours and check for concerts or ceremonies happening during your stay.
The garden contains the former docking point for the ganzarina, the Captain's boat, with direct access to Lake Garda. This historic mooring allowed the Lake Captain to reach his vessel quickly.
