Cybo-Soderini Chapel

The Cybo-Soderini Chapel in Santa Maria del Popolo is a baroque structure with polychrome marble walls and columns of Sicilian jasper, with a dome visible from Piazza del Popolo. The interior displays elaborate decoration and artistic details that characterize the entire space.

A cardinal commissioned the construction of a new chapel between 1682 and 1687, replacing a medieval structure that had stood before. This rebuilding followed a redesigned plan for the basilica to modernize its interior.

The chapel displays works by Carlo Maratta, a prominent 17th-century painter whose altarpiece shows religious figures in detailed composition. These artworks shape the interior and make this a space where craftsmanship and faith come together.

Access to the chapel comes through the basilica during regular hours, and visitors can view the interior details up close. Light changes throughout the day, so time the visit to see the artwork and decoration clearly.

Under the altar sits a sarcophagus holding remains of an early Christian martyr transferred to this location in the early 1700s. This relic makes the chapel a destination with deep spiritual roots and historical continuity.
