Domus de janas di Bruncu Maddeus, Prehistoric tomb structure in Guspini, Italy.
The Domus de janas di Bruncu Maddeus is a prehistoric burial site carved into a rock face, featuring a single chamber with an irregular elliptical shape that runs roughly 70 meters along the roadside. The structure follows the natural rock contours and displays typical features of Sardinian stone-age tombs.
This burial site was created between the 3rd and 2nd millennium BC during the period before the Nuragic culture emerged in Sardinia. During World War II, it was later used as a shelter.
The entrance facing northeast and the chamber layout show how ancient Sardinian people designed their burial spaces with careful attention to orientation and stone work.
The site can be reached by following an unmarked steep path that starts near a stone wall above the road to Santa Maria di Neapolis. Wear sturdy shoes and be cautious if the ground is wet or conditions are poor.
The internal chamber displays parallel grooves carved into its vault ceiling, revealing the stoneworking techniques used by ancient builders. These carved patterns remain visible today and show the skill required to shape stone by hand.
