Castello di Quirra

Castello di Quirra is a medieval fortress situated on a hilltop overlooking the Gulf of Villaputzu. The structure features defensive walls, several towers, and two cisterns that stored water for those living inside.

The fortress was built in the 12th century by Cagliari judges and served as a territorial boundary marker. It later came under Pisan control and eventually came under the rule of the Crown of Aragon.

The castle served as a power center for the noble families who ruled this region during medieval times. Walking through its remains shows how important this place was for controlling the surrounding lands.

Reaching the castle requires walking uphill from the old SS 125 road, a journey of about twenty minutes on foot. Proper hiking shoes and some stamina help make the climb manageable.

The castle is linked to the legend of Violante Carroz, a noblewoman from this era whose name carries dark tales. Stories speak of hidden treasures in nearby caves that supposedly remain undiscovered to this day.
