Pozzo sacro Is Pirois, Nuragic holy well in Villaputzu, Italy.
Pozzo Sacro Is Pirois is an ancient religious water structure with a trapezoidal form built from large stone blocks and standing about 3.8 meters tall. The interior contains a vaulted chamber with a central opening at the top and a small niche in the wall, both indicating its ceremonial function.
This structure was built during the Bronze Age and belongs to a group of about forty similar temple wells found across Sardinia. These sacred water buildings reached their peak importance and spread during the Iron Age.
This well served as a gathering place where the Nuragic people connected their spiritual beliefs with the practical need for water. The rituals performed here linked the community together through shared faith and custom.
Access is via state road 125 toward Tertenia, from which a dirt track leads to the site. Wear sturdy shoes and be prepared to cross a small river and walk on unpaved ground.
The structure features an unusual trapezoidal design that creates an optical illusion, making the interior appear larger than it actually is. This visual effect may have been intentional, designed to enhance the ritual experience.
