Parco naturale di Cavriglia, Nature reserve in Tuscany, Italy.
Cavriglia Nature Reserve is a nature reserve in Tuscany featuring rolling landscapes covered with pine forests and Mediterranean plants. Networks of walking paths weave between woodlands and open meadows throughout the area.
The area was once a mining region where coal extraction continued until the 1980s before operations stopped. After the mines closed, the land was transformed into a protected nature reserve where the ecosystem has recovered.
The reserve shows how local people lived with the land through old pathways once used by shepherds and farmers across the hills. You can still see traces of how communities shaped this landscape over time.
You can enter the reserve from several points, most of which offer free access and parking areas. It helps to pick up a map at visitor centers or bring your own before starting your walk through the trails.
An old mining pit has filled with water over time and now forms a lake that attracts waterfowl and creates a different habitat within the reserve. This accidental water body shows how nature gradually reclaims land that was once disturbed.
