Madonna dell'Oriente, Renaissance shrine in Tagliacozzo, Italy
Madonna dell'Oriente is a shrine perched on a hill overlooking the Imele River valley with three interior naves and a polygonal apse topped by hemispherical vaults. The interior spaces are arranged with decorative arches and frescoes depicting religious scenes.
The shrine underwent complete reconstruction in 1742 and was renovated again in 1932 following an earthquake in 1915 that caused major damage. These two phases of rebuilding shaped the structure visitors see today.
The shrine displays religious artworks including Byzantine icons and votive offerings that reflect devotion across centuries. These works show how local believers expressed their faith through material offerings left at the sanctuary.
The shrine sits on elevated terrain outside the town and offers views of the surrounding landscape. Visitors should expect an uphill walk to reach the location and wear sturdy footwear for easier access.
The shrine contains six altars, with two featuring elaborate triumphal arches decorated with frescoes. These arches display scenes from the life of Saint Francis painted by a local artist.
