Church of Santa Maria della Vittoria

The church of Santa Maria della Vittoria is a building with a single nave and side Baroque chapels that shape its interior space. Its neoclassical facade displays paired pilasters, and a square bell tower topped with a pyramidal spire forms a distinctive outline against the sky.

The building was constructed in 1525 next to the Orsini fortress as a replacement for a 13th-century abbey destroyed by natural disasters in 1506. It served as a symbol of reconstruction and renewal for the community after that loss.

The wooden Madonna and Child statue displays characteristics of French Gothic mixed with Florentine and Neapolitan artistic traditions. This blend of different artistic influences reflects the trade connections that linked this region to other parts of Italy and Europe.

The building stands at the highest point of Scurcola Marsicana, directly next to the Rocca Orsini fortress. Visit during daylight hours to appreciate the facade details and the bronze doors installed in 2014.

The Madonna statue here arrived following an unusual dispute between two towns over its possession. A donkey carrying the statue determined which location would keep this sacred object through its actions.
