San Pietro

The San Pietro church stands at the top of a hill, featuring a traditional basilica layout with Corinthian columns and an open timber Romanesque ceiling.

Originally constructed in the sixth century on the site of a former Apollo temple, the current structure dates from the twelfth century with modifications through time.

The church contains a thirteenth-century balustrade adorned with Solomonic columns and an elaborate cosmatesque ambo completed in 1209 with precious stone decorations.

The building now functions as a museum, allowing visitors to examine the architectural elements and religious artifacts from medieval and paleochristian periods.

The restoration work in the twentieth century removed eighteenth-century additions to return the structure to its medieval and paleochristian characteristics.
