Palazzo Leopardi, Neoclassical palace in Recanati, Italy
Palazzo Leopardi is a neoclassical palace featuring a fifteen-axis brick facade with symmetrical windows and a monumental central staircase that fronts the main square. Inside, it contains state rooms, an art gallery, private living quarters, and an adjoining garden.
The palace took its current form in the mid-18th century when separate buildings dating back to the 13th century were merged into one structure. This consolidation created the foundation for what would become the Leopardi family residence.
The library on the first floor was where poet Giacomo Leopardi spent much of his time studying, surrounded by his father Monaldo's extensive book collection. The rooms reflect how deeply intellectual pursuits shaped the daily life of this prominent family.
The palace offers clear access to its main areas including the state rooms, art gallery, private apartments, and garden. Taking time to understand the layout beforehand helps you move through the spaces more comfortably and fully appreciate each section.
The eastern wing preserves the bedroom where poet Giacomo Leopardi slept and worked, maintaining its original arrangement from his time. The basement space occupies what was once an oil mill, now repurposed to host rotating exhibitions.
