Sant'Ignazio

Sant'Ignazio is a church built on a mountain ridge overlooking the Valli di Lanzo valleys with Neoclassical architecture. The interior features two natural rock formations, one supporting the main altar and another holding a religious statue.

Local residents built a chapel at this location in 1629 in response to wolf attacks that had threatened the community in previous years. The site later evolved into an established sanctuary with a newer church structure.

The sanctuary serves as a place of personal reflection where visitors and pilgrims come to sit quietly and connect with their faith. The simple setting surrounded by mountains reinforces the sense of retreat from everyday life.

The mountaintop location requires a hike uphill with sturdy footwear and some physical effort. Starting early in the day is advisable since there is limited shade at higher elevation.

A large natural rock inside the church serves as the foundation for the altar rather than being removed. This clever design choice shows how builders worked with the existing geology instead of altering it.
