Church of Piedigrotta, Cave church in Pizzo, Italy.
The Church of Piedigrotta occupies a limestone cave situated close to the water's edge, with its interior extensively carved to accommodate worship. Multiple stone figures and religious compositions line the walls and floor of the excavated space.
Local sailors established this sacred site in 1675 after surviving a severe storm and fulfilling their vow to build a shrine. The sculptural work continued over generations as family craftsmen added to the carvings.
The church contains numerous sculptures carved from tufa rock, depicting biblical scenes and religious figures created by Angelo Barone and his descendants.
Access requires descending concrete stairs from the parking area, and visitors should expect wet or slippery surfaces due to the sea's proximity. Sturdy shoes help navigate the uneven ground safely.
Waves from the sea create echoes within the stone chambers, producing an unusual acoustic environment inside the cave. This natural resonance shifts with the tide, making each visit's sound experience different.
