Castello Normanno-Svevo

Castello Normanno-Svevo is a fortress perched on a hilltop with thick stone walls, rounded towers, and an inner courtyard that define its military design. The structure was built in stages using construction methods from different periods, creating distinct layers visible throughout the complex.

The fortress was built in the 11th century when Norman conquerors constructed a fortification on a previously settled site. Swabian rulers later took control and added their own defensive innovations to the structure.

The castle displays a blend of Norman defensive methods with Swabian building techniques that remain visible in its walls and towers. These layers show how different rulers left their mark on the fortress.

Access is best during daylight hours, and sturdy shoes are recommended since the climb to the hilltop is steep and uneven ground is common throughout the site. Guided tours help with navigation, and visitors should allow time to walk the full perimeter.

The castle still contains original underground storage chambers that served medieval residents during extended sieges and conflicts. These hidden rooms reveal how people had to think practically about survival within the fortress walls.
