Castello di Sorbello

Castello di Sorbello is a medieval fortress in Cortona with a rectangular layout and a crenelated tower set on a trapezoidal base. Two large gateways connect through an extensive courtyard that forms the heart of the structure.

The fortress was granted as an imperial fief by Emperor Sigismund of Luxembourg in 1416, giving it special legal status. This shaped its development until the major political changes in Europe in the early 19th century.

The interior shows a blend of medieval structures mixed with baroque modifications from the 17th century visible throughout the rooms. The furnishings reflect how the noble family lived here over centuries and adapted the space to their preferences.

Access is through guided tours offered mainly during the warmer months and available in different languages. It is helpful to check opening times in advance, as these can vary depending on the season.

The castle is still inhabited by descendants of the original noble family, giving it a living history. A small 17th-century chapel in the courtyard retains its original furnishings and tells of the family's private devotion.
