Castle of Mesagne

The Castle of Mesagne is a medieval fortification with thick stone walls, a central courtyard, and a tower that overlooks the surrounding Puglian countryside. The structure displays typical defensive features including multiple levels and passageways designed for protection.

The fortress was founded in the 11th century and underwent major reconstruction in 1430 under Giovanni Antonio Orsini del Balzo. This redesign reinforced its role as a military stronghold protecting the region from external threats.

The castle houses an archaeological museum showcasing artifacts discovered in the surrounding area and serves as a gathering space for local events. The courtyard remains an active venue where the community meets for celebrations and educational activities.

The site is open to visitors from Tuesday through Sunday, with guided tours available to explore the fortifications. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the passages along the walls and stairways are uneven and often steep.

A rooftop garden provides sweeping views of Mesagne's historic center and reveals the architectural details of medieval military design. From this elevated vantage point, the settlement and surrounding landscape become visible in a way not seen from ground level.
