Saint Martin hermitage, Mountain hermitage and chapel in Carisolo, Italy
Saint Martin hermitage is a small mountain chapel located at roughly 1200 meters elevation with a rectangular layout and basic wooden furnishings. The interior features prayer benches and an altar painting depicting the patron saint.
The hermitage was founded in 1312 and underwent major reconstruction in 1485 following damage. Religious hermits inhabited the site for centuries until occupation ceased around the middle of the 1800s.
The chapel serves as a gathering place for local religious celebrations honoring its patron saint throughout the year. Visitors can observe how the simple interior reflects generations of devoted prayers and community devotion.
The site is reached via a hiking trail of approximately 4 to 5 kilometers starting from Carisolo's central area, passing through conifer forest. Sturdy footwear and moderate fitness are needed for the mountain walk.
Local legend tells of the final hermit who received bread deliveries from a tame bear that visited regularly. After his death, flowers reportedly bloomed in January, an unusual occurrence in this mountain setting.
