Saint Stephen church, Church building in Carisolo, Italy

The Saint Stephen Church stands on a rocky hill overlooking the Sarca River at the entrance of Val Genova near Carisolo.

The original chapel from the 8th century, dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, was replaced by the Romanesque church in the 13th or 14th century.

The southern wall displays the Dance of Death fresco painted by Simone Baschenis in 1519, depicting skeletons paired with figures from different social classes.

The cemetery church contains numerous frescoes, including the Last Supper by Antonio Baschenis and the Legend of Charlemagne painted in 1534.

Three large wooden crosses stand outside the religious building, while Gothic inscriptions beneath the frescoes tell stories of Frankish kings passing through Val Rendena.
