Castello di Rontana, Medieval castle ruins in Brisighella, Italy.

The castle stands on Monte Rontana, featuring remains of defensive walls, a western tower, and a courtyard built above a large rainwater cistern.

First documented in 973, the fortress underwent multiple reconstructions, including significant modifications by Maghinardo Pagani di Susinana in 1292.

Archaeological excavations by the University of Bologna revealed a fortified village with houses, a parish church, a cemetery, and craft production areas.

The site contains three lines of fortification walls, walkways on stone arches, and corner towers that demonstrate medieval defensive architecture.

Excavations uncovered over 60 burial sites connected to a high ground church, along with marble columns and capitals from the Byzantine period.
