Castello di Rontana

Castello di Rontana stands on Monte Rontana with defensive walls, a western tower, and a courtyard positioned above a large rainwater cistern. The fortification features multiple defensive lines, stone archways, and corner towers that characterize its medieval military design.

The fortress was first documented in 973 and underwent multiple rebuildings over centuries. A major restructuring took place in 1292 under Maghinardo Pagani di Susinana.

The site reveals remains of a medieval village with residential buildings, a parish church, and craft workshops uncovered through archaeological work. These structures show how daily life was organized within the fortified settlement.

The site is reached by walking paths and offers views across the surrounding landscape from its hilltop location. Wear sturdy footwear since the terrain is uneven and parts are rocky.

Archaeological digs revealed more than 60 burial sites linked to a hilltop church. Fragments of marble columns and capitals from the Byzantine period were also found here.
