Villa Montalto, Renaissance villa near Termini Station, Rome, Italy.
The villa, designed by architect Domenico Fontana, featured extensive gardens and architectural elements across the Esquiline Hill in sixteenth-century Rome.
Pope Sixtus V commissioned the construction of Villa Montalto, which remained the largest noble residence within Rome's walls during the late 1500s.
The property exemplified the architectural preferences of Roman nobility, with its design incorporating gardens, fountains, and decorative elements typical of the period.
The nineteenth-century demolition of Villa Montalto made way for modern railway infrastructure, with only a relocated fountain remaining near San Pietro in Montorio.
Camilla Peretti acquired substantial land between 1576 and 1588 to establish this villa, marking an important case of female architectural patronage in Renaissance Rome.
