Borgo Valbelluna

Borgo Valbelluna, Italian comune

Borgo Valbelluna is a municipality formed in 2019 that unites three towns on the left bank of the Piave river. The core town of Mel features Renaissance palaces around Piazza Luciani with Venetian architectural style, including historic buildings like the Palazzo Del Zotto with its distinctive three-part window and the 1300s palace Barbuio.

The area has been inhabited since the Iron Age, with remains and artifacts from the Veneti people now displayed in the Palazzo delle Contesse museum. The Castle Zumelle and the church Arcipretale di Lentiai shaped the landscape for centuries, while local artists like Cesare and Tiziano Vecellio left their creative mark.

The place brings together three towns, each with distinct traditions rooted in their architecture and local life. Trichiana earned recognition as the town of the book, hosting an important annual writing competition that draws writers and readers from across the region.

The area offers about 300 kilometers of walking paths for exploring the landscape, from river gorges to wetlands. Visitors can get information at the local tourist office on Piazza Papa Luciani, where staff provide friendly advice on activities and where to stay.

Lentiai was once part of Cesana and housed a castle that guarded a strategic ferry crossing on the Piave, controlling movement through the region. This historic role as a traffic checkpoint still reflects in how the town is positioned along the river today.
