Castello Visconteo di Cassino Scanasio, Medieval castle in Cassino Scanasio, Italy.
Castello Visconteo di Cassino Scanasio is a fortified complex with four round corner towers surrounding a rectangular inner courtyard. Pointed arch windows and thick brick walls define the structure, located near Milan's outer ring road.
The building was constructed around 1000 and initially served as a fortress. In the 16th century it was transformed into a residential palace, and the Visconti di Modrone family acquired it from previous owners in 1836.
The entrance gateway displays a carved Visconti serpent symbol of the family's authority. This decoration reflects the architectural style that wealthy Milan nobility favored for their fortified country estates.
The castle is located near Milan's outer ring road and is currently not open to visitors. Due to structural safety concerns, it remains closed but can be viewed from the outside.
Cylindrical towers were added only in the 16th century to transform the medieval fortress into a more stately residence. This change shows how the purpose of fortified buildings shifted with the tastes of the nobility.
