The psychiatric facility opened on April 20, 1773, after Pope Clement XIV approved the transformation of the Lateran Canons monastery into a medical institution.
Physician Mario Tobino documented life at Fregionaia through literary works, recording medical practices and patient experiences during the twentieth century.
The institution incorporated manual labor, agricultural activities, and music therapy through a dedicated dance hall with an organ for patient rehabilitation.
