Acquario di Mezzani, Public aquarium and museum in Mezzani, Italy
Acquario di Mezzani is an aquarium and museum housed in a traditional farmhouse located in the floodplain with distinct sections for residence, stable, and storage. The tanks occupy the upper floor, designed to prevent water damage during flooding.
The facility suffered severe damage during a major flood in 2014, resulting in the loss of all its exhibits. This event prompted a complete renovation and restructuring of the building and its operations.
The center displays fish from the Po River across its different regions, helping visitors understand which species inhabit this important waterway.
The center is open on Sundays only, so plan your visit accordingly as access is limited to one day each week. Guided tours explain the species and help visitors understand the river ecosystem better.
The tanks were deliberately moved to the upper floor after previous flood damage nearly ended the project. This adaptation shows how local places adjust to geographic challenges and continue thriving.
