Chiaia di Luna, bay and beach in Italy
Chiaia di Luna is a crescent-shaped bay on Ponza island with fine sand and clear water, framed by tall rock cliffs. The inlet curves gently and provides natural shelter from the open sea, making it a comfortable place to swim.
The bay has served as a refuge for ships since ancient times and was later frequented by pirates and invaders. Its location and shape made it strategically important to the various groups who controlled the island.
The name means 'Moon Bay' and comes from the crescent shape of this inlet along the coastline. This poetic name shows how locals perceive the natural forms around them.
The best way to reach the bay is by walking on a trail that starts from Ponza town and takes about 30 to 40 minutes. Bring water and sun protection since there is little shade, and note that the beach can be difficult to access during storms or rough weather.
Access to the bay involves an old Roman stairway carved steeply into the rock face, descending many steps. This ancient structure remains visible today and was used by inhabitants over the centuries to safely reach the water.
