Terrazza a Mare, building in Lignano Sabbiadoro

Terrazza a Mare is a neo-expressionist building on the seafront of Lignano Sabbiadoro, designed by Marcello D'Olivo and Aldo Bernardis after a 1962 competition and opened in 1972. A sculptural pier forms a partly covered walkway on pilotis leading to a white twin volume housing a bar and restaurant, roofed by fan-shell vaults; a surreal oversized-tile annex and a belvedere with a small signal light complete the composition.

The first Terrazza a Mare was built in the 1920s by architect Provino Valle, replacing an earlier structure by the Venetian Giovanni Antonio Vendrasco. The current building comes from a 1962 architecture competition and was designed by Marcello D'Olivo with Aldo Bernardis; it opened in 1972. In 1988 a commemorative stamp showed it, and in May 2024 work began on seismic and energy upgrading, due to finish by early summer 2026.

The Terrazza a Mare takes its name from its direct seaside location and serves as a social gathering spot for both locals and visitors. By day it offers a vantage point for watching the sea, while evenings transform it into a place where people meet for drinks and conversation under the stars.

The venue is accessible by walking along the beach and can be reached from the parking area and beach promenade. Visitors should expect crowds during peak times, especially in early evening when people gather before sunset.

The belvedere at the tip of the pier holds a small signal lighthouse and gives a 360-degree view over the Adriatic. In 1988 Italy issued a commemorative stamp showing the Terrazza a Mare, a sign of how closely the building is tied to Lignano Sabbiadoro.
