Chiesa di San Martirio, Catholic church in Villa d'Adda, Italy.
The chiesa di San Martirio is a church building in Villa d'Adda with traditional stone construction located at Via San Martirio 1. Its interior features frescoed walls and ceiling that create a layered artistic character throughout the space.
The church first appeared in written records on January 13, 1329, in a sales document when it was part of the Parish of Brivio in Milan. Major renovations in 1796 completely reorganized the building by moving the choir westward and relocating the entrance eastward.
The Locatelli-Guarischini family commissioned frescoes during the 14th and 15th centuries, which still cover the interior walls and ceiling. These works depict religious scenes including the Madonna on her throne flanked by Saint Christopher and Saint Peter.
The building remains an active religious site within the Diocese of Bergamo that holds regular Catholic masses and ceremonies. Visitors should be aware that access times align with service schedules and respectful conduct is expected in this sacred space.
A striking feature is that the 1796 renovations reversed the entire spatial orientation of the building. This restructuring was so fundamental that the liturgical alignment and flow of visitors through the space were completely altered.
