Ospedale psichiatrico provinciale di Milano in Mombello, Italian psychiatric hospital
The complex in Limbiate consists of several multistory buildings scattered across a wide park with fields and pathways. Narrow roads lined with trees run between the pavilions, leading to courtyards where workshops and communal spaces once stood.
The site opened in 1866 to receive people with mental difficulties from the overcrowded Senavra hospital in Milan. After more than a century of operation, it closed in 1978 following national reform that ended the asylum system.
The buildings and outdoor areas are extensive, so plan enough time to walk between different sections. The site lies outside the town center in a quiet area, where you will find little traffic and plenty of greenery.
During World War I, part of the site served as a military hospital for soldiers with mental injuries, who helped build new roads between the pavilions. Some artists created works here that reflected their experiences in this setting and later became well known.
