Ayn Ghazal, Neolithic archaeological site near Zarqa River, Amman Governorate, Jordan

The settlement extends across 30 acres of land and contains remnants of rectangular mud-brick houses with communal living spaces at 720 meters elevation.

Established around 7250 BCE, the settlement grew from a few hundred residents to approximately 3000 inhabitants before declining drastically by 6900 BCE.

The excavation revealed numerous limestone statues with distinct features, including large heads with prominent eyes outlined in black pigment and painted clothing.

The archaeological site contains evidence of early agricultural practices, including cultivation of barley, chickpeas, lentils, and wheat, alongside goat domestication.

The inhabitants created some of the earliest known large-scale human statues, crafted from lime plaster layered over plant materials and buried in specific caches.
