Ancient Jerash, Archaeological site from Greco-Roman period in northern Jordan.

The ancient city spans across a vast plain surrounded by hills, featuring marble and granite structures with colonnaded streets and grand amphitheaters.

The settlement dates back to 7500 BC and reached its peak during Roman rule as part of the Decapolis League until an earthquake struck in 747 AD.

The city contains temples dedicated to Artemis and Zeus, along with numerous Byzantine churches that reflect the transition from Roman to Christian worship.

The archaeological site receives 330,000 visitors annually and maintains separate areas for modern development to protect the historical structures.

The engineering techniques used in construction were so advanced that substantial portions of the original city remain standing without modern reinforcement.
