Aioi Bridge, T-shaped bridge in Naka-ku, Hiroshima, Japan.
Aioi Bridge is a 123-meter structure in Naka-ku, Hiroshima, spanning two rivers with an unusual T-shaped layout. It carries both vehicles and tram tracks across the water, linking three banks together.
The military chose this spot in 1945 as the aiming point for the bomb drop because its shape and location were easily visible from the air. The structure was later rebuilt, with parts of the old foundations kept in place.
The name comes from the three river branches that meet at this spot, referencing the Japanese word for „coming together
The best view of the T-shape comes from above or from the nearby Peace Memorial Museum grounds. Tram and road traffic run alongside each other here, so watch for pedestrian signals when crossing.
Stone pillars that survived the explosion pressure in 1945 still stand at one end of the current structure. They carry visible traces of the heat and shockwave, serving today as silent witnesses to those seconds.
