Shiroishi-ku, Administrative ward in Sapporo, Japan
Shiroishi-ku is a ward in northeastern Sapporo featuring extensive residential neighborhoods alongside commercial zones. The area comprises established districts with a mix of urban and suburban characteristics.
The district formed in 1902 through the merger of Shiroishi and Kamishiroishi villages, and became an official ward of Sapporo in 1972 during the Winter Olympics. This reorganization marked its transition from rural land to an established urban district.
The ward has two official mascots, Shiroppy and Kuroppy, portrayed as snowwomen wearing distinctive rose-decorated hats that represent the district. These characters appear throughout the neighborhood and reflect the local community's identity.
The area is served by multiple stations on the Sapporo Municipal Subway Tozai Line for easy access throughout the district. The Hokkaido Expressway and major national routes provide additional travel options for moving around.
The ward maintains a special relationship with the city of Shiroishi in Miyagi Prefecture and fosters cultural exchanges between the two municipalities. This partnership connects the two places through shared initiatives.
