Matsushima Air Field, Military air base in Higashimatsushima, Japan
Matsushima Air Field is a military air base in Higashimatsushima equipped with two concrete runways for flight operations. The facility functions as a major training and operational center for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force.
The Imperial Japanese Navy established this base in 1937 as a strategic point during the Second Sino-Japanese War. After the war, it was taken over and modernized by the air component of Japan's Self-Defense Force.
The Japan Air Self-Defense Force maintains its aerobatic demonstration team, Blue Impulse, at this installation, representing military aviation excellence.
The base is located west of Ishinomaki and serves as headquarters for major air wing operations. Keep in mind this is an active military installation with limited public access to the grounds.
During the 2011 tsunami, eighteen F-2B fighter jets stationed here sustained damage from seawater flooding, revealing the installation's vulnerability to natural disasters. This event later prompted improved flood protection measures at the site.
