Sakaiminato, Port administrative division in Tottori Prefecture, Japan

Sakaiminato is a port administrative division at the northern tip of Yumigahama Peninsula in Tottori Prefecture, surrounded by sea, lake and channel. The municipal area runs along a narrow strip of land that separates Lake Nakaumi from the open waters of the Sea of Japan.

The port emerged in 1896 as a trading post and developed into a major transshipment point for goods between Japan and the Korean Peninsula. The fortifications from the Tottori Domain period now witness the military importance of the coastal location.

The port is the birthplace of Shigeru Mizuki, whose ghost tales shape the townscape, and more than a hundred bronze figures of his yokai creatures line the main street. Visitors find shops and cafes that adopt motifs from his works in windows, signs and facades.

Miho-Yonago Airport is located just a few kilometers from the center and offers connections to major Japanese cities. The JR West railway line runs through the municipal area and connects the port with Yonago and the regional rail network.

The old battery positions on the shore date from the Edo period and are among the few preserved coastal fortifications of this type in Japan. They now stand as a national monument within the city area and are freely accessible.
