Yūshi-en, Japanese garden on Daikonshima Island, Matsue, Japan
Yūshi-en is a Japanese garden situated on Daikonshima Island with a central pond, stone lanterns, waterfalls, and streams throughout the grounds. The garden grows around 250 different peony varieties that flower at different times of the year.
The garden was established in 1975 on an island previously used for growing Korean ginseng, transforming the land into a peony cultivation site. This shift in purpose created a new role for the location.
The garden reflects traditional Japanese horticultural approaches, particularly in how peonies receive seasonal care with straw protection during colder months. Visitors can observe these living gardening practices as workers maintain the plantings throughout the year.
The garden is open daily and allows visitors to walk through the grounds at their own pace without feeling rushed. Early morning or late afternoon visits offer the most pleasant light and fewer crowds for a more relaxed experience.
The peonies here flower throughout the year thanks to specialized cultivation methods that bring different varieties into bloom at different times. This means visitors can see blooms regardless of the season they visit.
