Lafcadio Hearn's Former Residence, Literary museum and historic samurai residence in Matsue, Japan

The traditional wooden residence features tatami floors, sliding doors, and a meticulously maintained garden with stone paths and carefully arranged plants.

Between June and November 1891, writer Lafcadio Hearn lived in this former samurai residence while working as an English teacher at Shimane Prefectural Normal School.

The residence preserves Hearn's writing desk, personal belongings, and the garden that inspired his essays about Japanese culture in 'Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan'.

The museum opens from 8:30 to 18:30 between April and September, and from 8:30 to 17:00 between October and March, with admission at 310 yen.

The residence maintains its original layout from the Meiji period, including the garden that Hearn described in detail in his chapter 'In a Japanese Garden'.
