Shimane Art Museum

Shimane Art Museum is an art museum in Matsue situated on the shore of Lake Shinji. The building incorporates water as a design element, with glass walls facing the lake that create reflected surfaces throughout the structure.

Architect Kiyonori Kikutake designed the building, which opened in 1999. It was established as a cultural center for Shimane Prefecture.

The museum displays works by Japanese and international artists working across different mediums such as paper, canvas, and metal. These collections reflect both local and global artistic traditions.

The museum is easy to locate with its large windows facing the lake, making it simple to enjoy both the collection and the landscape at once. Visitors should plan to move through the spaces at a leisurely pace and take in the views.

During warmer months, visitors can watch the sunset over the lake as the museum extends its hours to 30 minutes after sunset. This extended time offers a special chance to see the changing light across the water and shorelines.
