Shiogama, Port city in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan

Shiogama stretches along the Pacific coast between Sendai and Matsushima, featuring an extensive harbor that processes tuna and swordfish for distribution across Japan.

The city evolved from an ancient salt production center during the Tokugawa period to receive official city status in 1889, marking its transformation into a modern municipality.

The Shiogama Shrine performs traditional salt-making ceremonies each July, maintaining centuries-old rituals that gave the city its name, meaning salt furnace.

The JR Senseki Line connects Shiogama to Sendai in 25 minutes, with frequent trains departing from Hon-Shiogama Station to major regional destinations.

Shiogama maintains the highest concentration of sushi restaurants per capita in Japan, supported by its commercial fishing port and morning fish market.
