Sakura, Historic city in Chiba Prefecture, Japan
Sakura spans 103 square kilometers on the Shimōsa Plateau, positioned 40 kilometers northeast of Tokyo and 15 kilometers from Narita International Airport.
The area contained numerous Kofun period burial grounds and a Hakuho period Buddhist temple before becoming a strategic location for the Chiba clan during medieval times.
The National Museum of Japanese History presents six extensive galleries within the former grounds of Sakura Castle, chronicling Japan's development from ancient periods to modern times.
Visitors reach Sakura via the Sobu Line Rapid train from Tokyo to Chiba Station in 50 minutes, followed by a local train connection.
The Kawamura Memorial DIC Museum displays 1,000 pieces of 20th-century art, including works by Picasso, Chagall, Magritte, and Rothko in a dedicated space.
