Sunagawa, Railroad city in Sorachi Subprefecture, Japan

Sunagawa is a city in Sorachi Subprefecture spanning roughly 79 square kilometers in central Hokkaido. It connects residential neighborhoods, parks, and agricultural areas through various roads and rail lines that run through the region.

The city began as Nae Village in 1890 and went through several administrative changes before becoming a city in 1958. This shift reflected the growing development and settlement of the region.

The name comes from the Ainu language and refers to a river flowing near sandy shores. You can sense this connection to the land when walking through the city, as waterways and green areas shape how neighborhoods are arranged.

The city is well-connected by the Hakodate Main Line and Hokkaido Expressway, making it easy to navigate between neighborhoods. You'll find parks and train stations serve as useful reference points for getting around the area.

In 1984 it became Hokkaido's first Amenity Town, recognized for its integrated green spaces and thoughtful urban planning approach. This distinction set it apart from other communities and made it a model for how cities could balance growth with nature.
