Yaeyama Islands, Island group in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan
This group lies in the southwestern corner of Okinawa Prefecture and includes Ishigaki, Iriomote, and Taketomi along with several smaller islets. The area spreads across a seascape of tropical vegetation, coral reefs, and sandy shores that shift between open water and sheltered bays.
Maritime charts from the 1700s recorded these islands under changing names such as Majico Sima and Taipin Islands, given by European sailors. The variety of names reflects the different encounters between local people and foreign ships that anchored in these waters.
The Mushaama celebration on Hateruma brings together dancers who accompany a fertility deity through the village during the local Obon period. Residents have maintained this tradition for generations and share it with visitors who arrive in summer.
Ferry connections run from Ishigaki to the surrounding isles, with crossings that vary in length depending on weather and sea conditions. Lodging concentrates mainly on Ishigaki and Taketomi, while more remote spots offer limited infrastructure.
The Yaeyama palm grows wild only on Ishigaki and Iriomote, reaching a maximum of around 33 feet (10 meters) in height. Several villages continue to speak local languages alongside Japanese, kept alive by older residents in daily conversation.
