Takikawa

Takikawa is a city in Sorachi Subprefecture on Hokkaido, lying between two major rivers and surrounded by farmland. Forested areas alternate with cultivated fields, while small settlements complement the built-up center.

The settlement formed in 1886 when residents supplied construction workers along a river. Four years later the place gained official recognition as a village.

The name comes from an Ainu word referring to the natural waterways in the area. Today broad fields shape the cityscape, where farmers grow grain and vegetables.

The city sits halfway between Sapporo and Asahikawa and is easy to reach via main roads. During winter heavy snow falls, so visitors should plan for warm clothing and sturdy footwear.

The region pioneered apple growing on Hokkaido and won first prize at an agricultural fair in 1905. This success laid the foundation for a long tradition in fruit cultivation.
