Bunkamura, Arts complex in Dōgenzaka and Shōtō, Japan.
Bunkamura is an arts complex in Dōgenzaka and Shōtō within Shibuya, combining a gallery, concert hall, theatre, and museum under one roof. The individual spaces spread across multiple floors and connect through central foyers.
The center opened in autumn 1989 as a private initiative by a trading company aiming to establish a permanent home for performing and visual arts in Shibuya. Over the following decades, it became a regular address for international tours and traveling exhibitions.
The name combines the Japanese words for culture and village, reflecting the intent to create a place where different art forms come together. Visitors experience both European classical works and contemporary Japanese productions in close proximity.
The museum gallery remains closed until 2027 for renovation work, while concerts and theatre performances continue in the other halls. Visitors planning to attend multiple events should note the separate entrances for each hall.
A small cinema within the complex screens international films outside the commercial mainstream, often with English or Japanese subtitles. Many visitors discover this space only after several visits to the other areas.
