Sendai Castle, Japanese castle in Aoba, Japan
The castle stands on Mount Aoba at 130 meters elevation, with natural cliffs on its eastern and southern sides providing strong defensive positions.
Date Masamune established the castle in 1601, serving as the administrative center of the Sendai Domain for 270 years until the Meiji Restoration.
The castle forms part of the 100 Fine Castles of Japan collection and represents a strategic departure from typical castle design by not including a central tower.
The reconstructed guard tower remains the sole standing structure at the castle site, offering visitors views across Sendai city to the Pacific Ocean.
The northern stone walls demonstrate exceptional engineering with their precise stone-cutting techniques and sophisticated interlocking construction methods.
